Strom received the Chinese International Science and Technology Cooperation Award 2021 in late December 2022 from the hands of the Chinese ambassador to the Netherlands, Mr. Tan Jian. The award was to be presented at the end of 2021, but the ceremony was postponed one year due to corona restrictions.

Richard Strom promoted the cooperation of Dutch and Chinese astronomy for more than 25 years. Among other things, he was involved in the realization of FAST, the largest telescope in the world. He also gave lectures on (radio) astronomy in China and held a visiting professorship at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Strom also won a Chinese prize in 2020. The 2021 prize is the "highest scientific honor for foreigners," according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
